Church of the City began with a vision that was inspired by the words of the prophet Habakkuk:

LORD, I have heard of your fame;

I stand in awe of your deeds, LORD.

Renew them in our day,

in our time make them known;

Our prayer has been that God would again show his fame and deeds in our day, and He has answered those prayers in some truly miraculous ways. Who knew that two years into our story we would unite our vision and hearts with The People’s Church? Who knew we would eliminate $7M of debt in just over a year? What has been clear is that God is writing an extraordinary story and inviting us to be a part of it. Throughout this journey, we have tried to stay humble and simply respond to His leading. Though stretching and requiring great faith, the truly remarkable events that have occurred are tangible examples of God’s power and greatness in our day.

From the very beginning, our vision has been to plant a family of churches across the Greater Nashville area. With four congregations in four years, we are so thankful that God is bringing this dream to life. While we remain committed to planting more churches in the Nashville area, the Elders believe God is opening an additional door to expand this vision.

Recently Pastor Jon and Christy Tyson, who have been leading a church in New York, had a sense that God was calling them into a new season of ministry in that city. As a part of that discernment process, we began discussing what it would look like to partner together to plant Church of the City New York. This began a series of meetings over the last several months to prayerfully discern if this partnership was something God was leading us to do.

As many are aware, Jon previously served on staff at The People’s Church and Jon and Darren have been close friends for more than 25 years.

After much discussion, prayer and a thorough due-diligence process, the Elders feel a unanimous and passionate sense of calling to officially partner together to plant Church of the City New York. The two congregations Jon has been leading will enter into a pre-launch phase over the summer and officially relaunch as COTC New York in September.

With 12 years of church planting experience in New York City, Jon and Christy bring tremendous gifts to our team, specifically in the areas of teaching, discipleship and effective evangelism in a post-Christian secular culture. The churches the Tysons are leading are vibrant congregations, they are financially self-sufficient, they are not bringing any debt, and our Elders are convinced that together we can do more fruitful Kingdom work than we ever could separately. You can read the statement to the New York church plants here.

Next month, (June 25), Jon will join us for our Sunday services at COTC Franklin where we will share more of how each church will benefit from this new ministry partnership.

If you have any questions, you can reach our Elders here.

Thanks for being a part of this story. We continue to pray that we would see the fame and deeds of God renewed and known in our time.

These are exciting days.
